Russell (Ontario federal electoral district)

Russell was a federal electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that existed from 1867 to 1999. It was located in Eastern Ontario, encompassing parts of what is now the United Counties of Prescott and Russell, as well as a portion of the City of Ottawa.

The riding was created as part of the British North America Act, 1867. Its boundaries were adjusted several times throughout its history to reflect population changes and electoral redistribution. For much of its existence, Russell was considered a safe Liberal seat, although there were periods where other parties, such as the Progressive Conservatives, were able to win the riding.

Notable Members of Parliament for Russell included:

  • Francis Hincks (1869-1873)
  • Alexander McLennan (1891-1904)
  • Charles Murphy (1908-1925)

In 1996, as part of a major electoral redistribution, the riding of Russell was dissolved. The majority of its territory was transferred to the newly created riding of Glengarry—Prescott—Russell, while a smaller portion became part of the Ottawa—Vanier riding.
