Robert Lima (poet)

Robert Lima (born 1939) is an American poet, playwright, translator, literary critic, and scholar specializing in twentieth-century Spanish and Portuguese literature, particularly surrealism and the avant-garde. He is known for his contributions to the study of Federico García Lorca and Ramón del Valle-Inclán, among others.

Lima holds a Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures. He has taught at various universities, including Pennsylvania State University, where he was a professor emeritus of Spanish, Portuguese, and Comparative Literature.

His poetry often explores themes of identity, exile, and the metaphysical, drawing inspiration from his academic interests and personal experiences. Lima's work exhibits a sophisticated use of language and imagery, frequently engaging with surrealist and symbolist aesthetics.

He is also recognized for his translations of Spanish and Portuguese poetry and drama into English, making significant works accessible to a wider audience. His critical essays and books have contributed significantly to the understanding of key figures and movements in Iberian literature.

Beyond his academic and literary pursuits, Lima is interested in the occult and esoteric, which influences his creative work to some extent. This interest is visible in some of his poems and theatrical pieces.
