Landore
Landore is a district and electoral ward in the city of Swansea, Wales. Located approximately two miles north-east of Swansea city centre, it is situated in the Lower Swansea Valley.
History and Industry:
Landore was historically a significant industrial area, particularly associated with metalworking. In the 19th century, it was a major centre for the production of steel, tinplate, and copper, owing to its proximity to coal mines and the River Tawe, which provided transportation and power. Several large factories and works were located in Landore, contributing significantly to Swansea's industrial output and employment. Notable industrialists, such as John Henry Vivian, played a role in the development of the area.
Geography and Demographics:
Landore is bordered by the River Tawe to the west and by the Morriston district to the north. The area is characterised by a mix of residential areas, industrial estates, and green spaces. The demographics of Landore have changed over time, reflecting broader patterns of industrial decline and urban development in the Swansea area.
Modern Landore:
While the heavy industries that once dominated Landore have largely disappeared, the area remains a significant commercial and residential hub. There are efforts to redevelop former industrial sites for new uses, including housing, retail, and leisure facilities. Landore is served by a railway station on the South Wales Main Line, providing connections to Swansea, Cardiff, and other destinations.
Local Government:
Landore is an electoral ward to Swansea Council. The ward elects representatives to the council to address local issues and contribute to the overall governance of the city. The boundaries of the ward may be subject to periodic review and adjustment.
