File 13 (film)
File 13 is a 1932 American pre-Code mystery film directed by Tay Garnett. The film stars Lew Ayres, Lila Lee, and Jason Robards Sr. It's based on the story "File Number 113" by Emile Gaboriau.
The plot revolves around a young reporter, Wally, who investigates a seemingly straightforward case involving stolen bonds. As he digs deeper, he uncovers a complex web of deceit, conspiracy, and hidden identities within a powerful and wealthy family. His pursuit of the truth puts him in danger, forcing him to navigate a treacherous landscape of corruption and blackmail.
While not a widely known or critically acclaimed film, "File 13" is notable for its fast-paced narrative, engaging mystery, and pre-Code sensibilities, which allowed for more daring themes and dialogue compared to later films produced under the stricter Hays Code. It showcases early examples of investigative journalism themes in cinema.
