Porter is a dark style of beer that originated in London, England, in the early 18th century. It is generally brewed with roasted malt, giving it a characteristic dark color and flavors often described as chocolate, coffee, caramel, and toast.

The name "porter" is believed to have originated from its popularity with the porters and other manual laborers of London. Historical accounts suggest it was a cheaper, stronger alternative to other beers available at the time, favored for its nourishing qualities and perceived energy boost.

Porter beers typically have an ABV (alcohol by volume) ranging from 4% to 6.5%, though variations exist. Historically, porter was often blended at the pub from different beers to achieve a desired flavor profile.

Over time, porter evolved and diversified. It gave rise to the stronger stout, which was initially marketed as "stout porter." While stout is a descendant of porter, it is now considered a distinct style with its own characteristics, such as a generally higher ABV and often more intense roasted flavors.
