Sweetheart of Sigma Chi (film)
Sweetheart of Sigma Chi is a 1933 American pre-Code musical film directed by Edwin L. Marin, starring Buster Crabbe, Mary Carlisle, and Charles Starrett.
The film is based upon the popular eponymous 1911 song, "The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi," written by Byron D. Stokes and F. Dudleigh Vernor, members of the Sigma Chi fraternity at Albion College. The plot revolves around a football player, Biff Bowers (Crabbe), who falls in love with the "Sweetheart" of the Sigma Chi fraternity, Ruth (Carlisle). Complications arise due to a rival for Ruth's affections, Ted Sterling (Starrett), and the pressures of Biff's athletic pursuits. The film features musical numbers and a lighthearted romantic storyline typical of early Hollywood musicals. Its enduring appeal stems in part from its connection to the well-known fraternity song and its depiction of college life during the pre-World War II era.
