Pehrspace
Pehrspace was a small, artist-run, non-profit exhibition space located in Los Angeles, California. Founded by artist Pehr Peterson in 2005, it operated in a tiny 60-square-foot closet, challenging conventional notions of gallery space and accessibility. The name "Pehrspace" is a portmanteau of the founder's first name and the word "space."
Pehrspace primarily showcased emerging and experimental artists, often featuring video art, performance art, installation art, and other works that pushed the boundaries of traditional art forms. Its diminutive size fostered a sense of intimacy and experimentation, attracting a diverse audience of artists, students, and art enthusiasts.
The gallery held weekly openings, transforming the cramped space into a vibrant hub for the Los Angeles art community. The ephemeral nature of many of the exhibitions and performances, combined with the limitations of the space, contributed to its unique and influential character.
Pehrspace closed its doors in 2016 after over a decade of operation. However, its impact on the Los Angeles art scene remains significant, having provided a platform for countless artists and challenged the norms of art presentation and accessibility. The space is remembered for its commitment to supporting emerging talent and its ability to create a thriving artistic community within a remarkably small footprint.
