Alastair Down (journalist)

Alastair Down was a British journalist and horse racing commentator, renowned for his distinctive voice, erudite commentary, and occasionally controversial opinions. He primarily wrote for The Racing Post for over 30 years, becoming one of the most recognized and respected voices in the sport.

Down was known for his colorful prose, often employing wit and historical or literary allusions to enhance his racing reports and previews. He was a passionate advocate for the sport and wasn't afraid to criticize its shortcomings. His writing style and strong opinions made him a figure admired and, at times, criticized by those within the horse racing industry and the wider public.

Down's career also included television work, contributing to Channel 4 Racing and At The Races. He retired from The Racing Post in 2016. He died in 2023.
