Hunter Island (Bronx)
Hunter Island is a former island and now a peninsula located in the Bronx borough of New York City, within Pelham Bay Park. It is connected to the mainland by a causeway and is a popular recreational area.
Originally a true island, it was named after the Hunter family, who owned the property during the 18th and 19th centuries. John Hunter, Jr., was a prominent landowner and developer in the area.
The island's landscape features diverse ecosystems, including forests, meadows, and rocky shoreline. It is home to a variety of flora and fauna, making it a valuable natural resource within the urban environment.
Significant changes occurred in the early 20th century when Pelham Bay Park was developed. The filling of the waterways separating Hunter Island from the mainland transformed it into a peninsula. Orchard Beach, created by Robert Moses, further altered the area's geography.
Today, Hunter Island offers various recreational opportunities, including hiking trails, beaches, and picnic areas. It is a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and outdoor recreationists, offering a respite from the city's urban landscape. It is managed by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation as part of Pelham Bay Park.
