Jan Tęczyński (1485–1553)

Jan Tęczyński (born circa 1485, died 1553) was a Polish nobleman, castellan of Kraków, and a significant figure in Polish politics and military affairs during the reign of King Sigismund I the Old and King Sigismund II Augustus. He belonged to the powerful Tęczyński family, which held significant influence and vast estates in Lesser Poland.

Tęczyński held numerous important offices throughout his career, including that of castellan of Wojnicz and castellan of Kraków, the latter being one of the highest-ranking positions in the Polish senate. These appointments reflected both his family's prestige and his own capabilities.

He was actively involved in various diplomatic missions and military campaigns. His service included participation in conflicts with Muscovy and the defense of Poland's borders against Tatar incursions. His military leadership and political acumen earned him recognition and respect within the Polish nobility.

Tęczyński was a staunch supporter of the Catholic Church and actively participated in suppressing the spread of Protestantism within his lands. He was also a patron of the arts and sciences, contributing to the development of culture within the regions under his influence.

He married Barbara Zborowska, a member of another prominent Polish noble family, further consolidating the Tęczyński family's power and influence.
