Square (slang)
Square is a slang term, primarily used in the 20th century, to describe a person who is considered conventional, boring, out-of-touch, or lacking in hipness or originality. A "square" typically adheres to mainstream societal norms and values, often to an exaggerated degree. The term implies a disapproval of the individual's conformity and lack of adventurousness or individuality.
The origins of the term are debated, but it is often attributed to the jazz and beatnik subcultures of the 1940s and 1950s. In these circles, "square" likely alluded to the rigidity and unyielding nature of a geometric square, contrasting it with the fluid and improvisational qualities valued in jazz music and bohemian lifestyles.
A "square" might be someone who is seen as overly concerned with rules, schedules, and proper etiquette. They may be perceived as resistant to change, unfamiliar with current trends, and uncomfortable with anything unconventional.
The term has largely fallen out of common usage, although its meaning is still generally understood. More modern slang terms have emerged to describe similar characteristics, such as "basic" or "lame." However, "square" retains a certain historical connotation, evoking a specific image of mid-century conformity.
