HNLMS Walrus (1985)

The HNLMS Walrus was the lead boat of the Walrus-class of diesel-electric submarines built for the Royal Netherlands Navy. Laid down in 1979 and commissioned in 1985, she represents a significant development in Dutch submarine design, incorporating advanced sensors, improved automation, and a focus on acoustic stealth.

The Walrus class was intended to replace the older Dolfijn-class submarines. The design process was lengthy and complex, facing numerous delays and technical challenges. The Walrus herself experienced a significant fire during her construction in 1983, further delaying her commissioning.

The primary role of HNLMS Walrus and her sister submarines has been intelligence gathering, anti-surface warfare, and support of special operations. They have participated in various international exercises and deployments throughout their service lives.

HNLMS Walrus underwent a major modernization program in the late 2000s and early 2010s to extend her operational life and upgrade her capabilities. This included improvements to her sonar, combat management system, and communications equipment. Despite her age, HNLMS Walrus continues to serve as a capable and technologically advanced submarine within the Dutch fleet. She is expected to be replaced by a new generation of submarines in the future.
