Frederick Bates (entomologist)

Frederick Bates (1829-1903) was a British entomologist specializing in Coleoptera (beetles). He was a cousin of the more famous naturalist Henry Walter Bates, with whom he sometimes collected specimens. He is particularly known for his work on the Central American beetle fauna, especially that of Guatemala.

Bates's research relied heavily on extensive collections he made and received, and he was a prolific describer of new species. He authored numerous scientific papers and monographs, contributing significantly to the understanding of beetle diversity, particularly within the families Cerambycidae (longhorn beetles) and Cicindelidae (tiger beetles). His publications remain important resources for researchers studying the taxonomy and biogeography of Central American Coleoptera.
