SM U-5 (Austria-Hungary)

SM U-5 was a U-5-class submarine, or U-boot, of the Austro-Hungarian Navy (K.u.K. Kriegsmarine) during World War I. One of the first submarines commissioned by Austria-Hungary, U-5 was built by Germaniawerft in Kiel, Germany, as a Type UB I submarine and shipped in sections to Pola (Pula), where it was assembled. She was launched in April 1910 and commissioned in March 1911.

Early in World War I, U-5 was involved in several notable actions. On 17 August 1914, under the command of Linienschiffsleutnant Georg Ritter von Trapp (later famous as the patriarch of the Trapp Family Singers), U-5 sank the French armored cruiser Jean Bart in the Adriatic Sea. This was a significant success for the Austro-Hungarian Navy and earned von Trapp considerable recognition.

Throughout the war, U-5 continued to patrol the Adriatic and Mediterranean Seas, targeting enemy warships and merchant vessels. She conducted several patrols, disrupting Allied shipping and contributing to the overall Austro-Hungarian war effort in the Adriatic.

U-5 was eventually retired from service in 1918 following the end of World War I and the dissolution of Austria-Hungary. She was surrendered to Italy as part of war reparations and was subsequently scrapped.
