Ghulam Haider (composer)

Ghulam Haider (1908 – 1953) was a prominent Pakistani and Indian film composer. He is considered one of the pioneers of film music in the Indian subcontinent and is credited with revolutionizing its sound. He is particularly known for his innovative use of Punjabi folk melodies and rhythms in his compositions, and for introducing a more robust and energetic style of orchestration.

Haider began his career in Lahore in the pre-partition era. He composed for several successful films, gaining recognition for his unique musical arrangements and catchy tunes. He is often credited with giving a break to legendary playback singer Lata Mangeshkar, introducing her to film producers and helping her secure early opportunities.

After the partition of India in 1947, Haider migrated to Pakistan and continued his work in the nascent Pakistani film industry. He played a significant role in shaping the music landscape of early Pakistani cinema. He remained a respected and influential figure until his death in 1953. His contributions continue to be celebrated as foundational to the development of South Asian film music.
