Journals (Cobain)
Journals is a collection of Kurt Cobain's writings, sketches, and personal artifacts, published by Riverhead Books in November 2002. The content spans from the late 1980s until shortly before his death in 1994.
The book offers insight into Cobain's thoughts on a wide range of topics, including his childhood, his struggles with fame and addiction, his relationship with Courtney Love, his artistic influences, his views on music and society, and his health. It is comprised of scanned pages from his actual journals and notebooks, complete with handwritten text, doodles, and crossed-out passages. Some portions were transcribed to improve readability.
The publication of Journals was controversial, with some critics and fans questioning the ethics of publishing Cobain's private writings. However, Cobain himself had reportedly expressed interest in publishing a book of his writings prior to his death, and Love supported the publication.
The book was edited and introduced by David Fricke, a senior editor at Rolling Stone magazine. Journals became a New York Times bestseller and provided a deeper understanding of Cobain's complex and often contradictory personality. It offers a raw, unfiltered glimpse into the mind of the iconic musician.
