iPASS (Taiwan)
iPASS is a contactless smartcard payment system used in Taiwan. It facilitates payments for a wide range of services, including public transportation (buses, MRT, trains, ferries), convenience stores, parking, government services, and some leisure and retail establishments.
Introduced by iPASS Corporation, formerly known as Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corporation, iPASS is one of the major electronic ticketing systems in Taiwan, competing primarily with EasyCard. It aims to provide a convenient and efficient payment method for daily life, reducing the need for cash transactions.
Users can add value to their iPASS cards at various locations, such as convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Hi-Life, OK Mart), MRT stations, and dedicated iPASS service centers. The card operates using RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology, allowing for quick and easy tap-and-go payments.
iPASS is widely accepted throughout Taiwan, although coverage may vary slightly depending on the specific service. Expansion efforts continue to increase the acceptance network. Different card designs and co-branded iPASS cards are also available, often featuring characters or promotions. iPASS offers a range of benefits, including discounts on certain transportation routes and participation in loyalty programs.
