John Simpson (Unitarian)

John Simpson (1746-1813) was a prominent Unitarian minister in late 18th and early 19th century England. He served as minister of the New Meeting House in Birmingham from 1773 until his death.

Simpson was known for his advocacy of rational Christianity and his commitment to civil and religious liberty. He was a strong supporter of the French Revolution, which led to accusations of radicalism and made him a target during the Priestley Riots in Birmingham in 1791. While his home wasn't directly attacked, the riots targeted those associated with Joseph Priestley and dissenting religious views.

Simpson was a prolific writer and published numerous sermons and tracts on theological and political subjects. His writings often emphasized the importance of reason and individual judgment in matters of faith. He also played a significant role in the development of Unitarianism in England, helping to establish it as a distinct theological movement. He was a key figure in fostering intellectual and religious debate within the dissenting community.
