Mute (soup)
Mute is a Chilean soup traditionally associated with the Chiloé Archipelago. It is a hearty and substantial dish primarily consisting of dried hulled wheat (mote), various types of meat (typically beef, pork, and/or sausages), and vegetables.
The preparation of mute involves a lengthy cooking process to properly soften the wheat and meld the flavors of the different ingredients. Common vegetables included in the soup are potatoes, onions, carrots, and sometimes pumpkin. The meat components often contribute a rich, savory broth, which is further seasoned with herbs and spices such as garlic, cumin, and paprika.
Mute is considered a staple food in Chiloé, particularly during the colder months. It is often served as a main course due to its high nutritional value and filling nature. Variations of the recipe exist depending on local preferences and availability of ingredients. For instance, seafood can be incorporated into mute, reflecting the island's maritime environment.
