Jammu and Kashmir (union territory)

Jammu and Kashmir is a union territory of India, located in the northernmost part of the country. It was formed on October 31, 2019, following the passage of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, which bifurcated the former state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

Geography:

Jammu and Kashmir is characterized by diverse terrain, including mountainous regions of the Himalayas, fertile valleys, and plains. The Kashmir Valley, known for its scenic beauty, is a significant part of the union territory. Major rivers include the Jhelum, Chenab, and Indus. It was a princely state under British rule, ruled by the Dogra dynasty. Following the partition of India in 1947, the then-ruler Maharaja Hari Singh acceded to India. This accession is disputed by Pakistan, leading to a protracted territorial conflict. Article 370 of the Indian Constitution granted special autonomous status to Jammu and Kashmir, which was revoked in 2019 leading to the formation of the Union Territory.

Governance:

As a union territory, Jammu and Kashmir is governed by a Lieutenant Governor appointed by the President of India. A legislative assembly exists, and elections are held to elect its members. The administrative capital alternates between Srinagar in the summer and Jammu in the winter.

Economy:

The economy of Jammu and Kashmir is primarily based on agriculture, tourism, and handicrafts. Agriculture includes the cultivation of rice, maize, fruits (apples, walnuts, apricots), and saffron. Tourism is a major source of revenue, attracting visitors to the Kashmir Valley for its natural beauty and recreational activities. Demographics:

The population of Jammu and Kashmir is diverse, with the majority being Muslims in the Kashmir Valley and Hindus in the Jammu region. Significant populations of Sikhs and Buddhists are also present. The primary languages spoken are Kashmiri, Dogri, Urdu, and Hindi.

Culture:

The culture of Jammu and Kashmir is a blend of various influences, reflecting its diverse ethnic and religious composition. Kashmiri music, dance, and cuisine are well-known. Handicrafts and traditional arts are integral parts of the cultural heritage.
