John Campbell (US Treasurer)

John Campbell (born c. 1765, died 1828) served as the fourth Treasurer of the United States from 1814 to 1829. Appointed by President James Madison, he succeeded Albert Gallatin during the War of 1812 and served under presidents James Monroe and John Quincy Adams.

Campbell's tenure as Treasurer was marked by the financial challenges of the post-war period, including managing the national debt and overseeing the re-establishment of a national bank, the Second Bank of the United States, which had been chartered in 1816. He was known for his cautious and conservative approach to fiscal management.

Prior to becoming Treasurer, Campbell practiced law and held various political offices in Maryland. He served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates and later as a U.S. Representative for Maryland.
