Church of Sts. Constantine and Helen (Edirne)

The Church of Sts. Constantine and Helen is a Bulgarian Orthodox church located in Edirne, Turkey (historically known as Adrianople). It is one of the two surviving Bulgarian Orthodox churches in the city, the other being St. George's Church. The church is dedicated to the Byzantine Emperor Constantine the Great and his mother, Helena of Constantinople, both considered saints in the Orthodox tradition.

Constructed in 1869, during a period of Ottoman reforms that allowed for the building of more elaborate churches, the Church of Sts. Constantine and Helen is an example of late Ottoman-era religious architecture. Its architecture reflects a blend of traditional Orthodox design principles with influences from the wider European architectural trends of the 19th century. The church features a traditional cross-in-square layout with a central dome and notable decorative elements, including frescoes and iconostasis.

Throughout its history, the church served as an important center for the Bulgarian Orthodox community in Edirne. It played a significant role in preserving Bulgarian language, culture, and religious traditions in the region, particularly during a time when the Bulgarian community faced various challenges.

Following the Balkan Wars and the population exchanges between Greece and Turkey in the early 20th century, the Bulgarian population of Edirne diminished significantly. This decline impacted the church community, although the church continues to operate as a place of worship for the remaining Bulgarian Orthodox population and attracts visitors interested in its historical and architectural significance. Regular services are still held, albeit less frequently than in the past. The church stands as a testament to the historical presence of Bulgarian Orthodoxy in Edirne and the broader Thracian region.
