German submarine U-158 (1941)
U-158 was a Type IXC German U-boat of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine during World War II. Her keel was laid down on 1 September 1940 by DeSchiMAG AG Weser in Bremen as yard number 999, she was launched on 15 April 1941, and commissioned on 4 August 1941 under the command of Kapitänleutnant Dietrich von der Esch.
U-158 conducted five war patrols, sinking 20 ships for a total of 120,714 gross register tons (GRT) and damaging one for 8,062 GRT. Her areas of operation were primarily in the Atlantic Ocean, particularly along the eastern coast of the United States and in the Caribbean Sea.
On 30 June 1942, U-158 sank the American passenger ship Monterrey.
On 28 June 1943, U-158 was sunk in the Atlantic Ocean, east of Bermuda, in position 32°45′N 67°28′W, by depth charges from a United States Navy PB4Y-1 Liberator aircraft piloted by Lieutenant Commander Richard Schreder of VB-32. All 53 crew members perished.
