Sibusiso Moyo (politician)

Sibusiso "SB" Moyo (c. 1960 – 20 January 2021) was a Zimbabwean politician and army general. He is best known for announcing the November 2017 military intervention that led to the removal of Robert Mugabe from power.

Early Life and Military Career:

Details of Moyo's early life are not widely available. He rose through the ranks of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA), eventually achieving the rank of Lieutenant General.

Role in the 2017 Zimbabwean Coup d'état:

On 15 November 2017, Moyo, wearing military fatigues, appeared on national television to announce that the military had taken control of the country. He stated that it was not a military takeover but rather an effort to target "criminals" surrounding then-President Robert Mugabe. This intervention ultimately led to Mugabe's resignation and the subsequent inauguration of Emmerson Mnangagwa as President.

Political Career:

Following Mugabe's removal, Moyo was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in President Mnangagwa's cabinet. In this role, he was responsible for Zimbabwe's foreign policy and promoting international trade. He actively worked to re-engage Zimbabwe with the international community and attract foreign investment.

Death:

Sibusiso Moyo died on 20 January 2021 from complications related to COVID-19. He was declared a national hero and buried at the National Heroes Acre in Harare.
