Orak Island (Muğla)
Orak Island is a small, uninhabited island located off the coast of the Bodrum Peninsula in Muğla Province, Turkey. It is situated in the Aegean Sea and is known for its exceptionally clear turquoise waters, making it a popular destination for diving, snorkeling, and boat tours.
The island derives its name, which translates roughly to "Sickle Island" in Turkish, from its crescent or sickle-shaped appearance. While largely barren of vegetation beyond sparse scrub, the underwater environment around Orak Island teems with marine life. Common sightings include various species of fish, sea urchins, and other Aegean marine fauna.
Orak Island is accessible primarily by boat from Bodrum, Gümbet, and other nearby coastal towns. Day trips to the island typically involve swimming, sunbathing, and exploring the coves and underwater landscape. The island's isolation contributes to the clarity of the water, providing excellent visibility for underwater activities.
Because it is uninhabited, Orak Island lacks infrastructure such as restaurants or restroom facilities. Visitors are advised to bring their own supplies, including food, water, and sunscreen. Environmental responsibility is crucial when visiting, as preserving the pristine ecosystem is essential. The island’s natural beauty makes it a favored stop for private yachts and gulets cruising the Turkish Riviera.
