Coal House (Williamson, West Virginia)

The Coal House in Williamson, West Virginia, is a building constructed entirely of bituminous coal. Built in 1933, it was conceived by J.W. Callahan, secretary of the Williamson Chamber of Commerce, to showcase the region's abundant coal resources and promote the local coal industry.

Approximately 65 tons of locally mined coal were used in its construction. The coal was cut into blocks of varying sizes and then cemented together, forming the walls and structure of the building. The exterior walls are visibly made of coal blocks.

Initially, the Coal House served as a tourist information center and a testament to the economic significance of coal in the area. Over the years, it has housed various businesses and organizations.

The Coal House remains a prominent landmark in Williamson and a symbol of the region's coal heritage. It is a popular tourist attraction and a reminder of the important role that coal played in the development of the area. The structure is generally open to the public for viewing, and information about its history and construction is often available.
