Gogo (mayor of the palace)
Gogo was a high-ranking official in the Frankish kingdoms during the Merovingian dynasty. He held the position of mayor of the palace of Austrasia from approximately 576 to 581. As mayor of the palace, Gogo was one of the most powerful figures in the kingdom, responsible for overseeing the administration of the royal household and exercising considerable influence in political affairs.
His appointment came during the minority of Childebert II, the young king of Austrasia. Gogo served as a guardian and regent, effectively ruling on Childebert's behalf. He was instrumental in maintaining order and stability within the kingdom during a period of potential instability.
Gogo's influence extended beyond domestic affairs. He also played a key role in diplomatic relations with other Frankish kingdoms and neighboring powers. His tenure is generally viewed as a period of relative peace and prosperity for Austrasia.
Following his death in 581, Gogo was succeeded as mayor of the palace by Wandalenus. Despite his relatively short time in office, Gogo left a lasting impact on the political landscape of Austrasia and the wider Frankish world. He is remembered as a capable and influential administrator who helped to secure the reign of Childebert II.
