1972 United States presidential election in Washington (state)

The 1972 United States presidential election in Washington state took place on November 7, 1972. All 50 states and the District of Columbia were part of the election. Washington voters chose nine electors to the Electoral College, who voted for president and vice president.

The election was a landslide victory for incumbent Republican President Richard Nixon and his running mate, Vice President Spiro Agnew. They defeated Democratic candidate Senator George McGovern and his running mate Sargent Shriver.

Nixon won Washington state with 56.57% of the popular vote, while McGovern received 37.34%. A minor candidate, John G. Schmitz of the American Independent Party, garnered 5.22% of the vote. Other minor candidates received negligible votes.

Nixon carried most counties in Washington state, including the more populous counties of King, Pierce, and Snohomish. McGovern’s support was primarily concentrated in areas with strong Democratic or liberal leanings, particularly in and around Seattle. The election reflected a broader national trend of Republican dominance in presidential politics at the time.
