Forbes River (New South Wales)
The Forbes River is a river located in the Mid North Coast region of New South Wales, Australia. It rises in the Great Dividing Range, flowing generally eastwards through rugged terrain before joining the Hastings River near Yarras. The river is known for its scenic beauty, particularly within the Forbes River National Park, which protects significant areas of subtropical rainforest and associated flora and fauna.
The river's catchment area is relatively small and predominantly forested. Rainfall within the catchment is high, contributing to consistent flows in the river. The Forbes River is popular for recreational activities such as bushwalking, birdwatching, and camping within the National Park.
The river is named after Francis Forbes, who served as the Chief Justice of New South Wales in the 1820s and 1830s. Timber logging played a role in the river's history, with logs often transported downstream to mills. Today, conservation efforts focus on preserving the biodiversity and natural values of the Forbes River and its surrounding environment.
