86th Brigade (United Kingdom)
The 86th Brigade was a Territorial Force infantry brigade of the British Army that existed during both World War I and World War II.
World War I:
Formed in 1914 as part of the 29th Division, the 86th Brigade was composed primarily of battalions from London Territorial regiments. It served with distinction on the Western Front throughout the war, participating in major battles including the Battle of the Somme, the Battle of Arras, and the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele). The brigade endured heavy casualties throughout the conflict. Following the armistice in November 1918, the brigade was gradually demobilized.
World War II:
The 86th Brigade was reformed in 1939 as part of the 30th Infantry Division, a second-line Territorial Army division. Initially assigned to home defense duties, it was later designated as a training formation. The brigade's role was to prepare conscripts and reservists for active service overseas. In 1943, the 30th Division, including the 86th Brigade, was disbanded and its personnel reassigned to other units. The brigade was not involved in any overseas combat during World War II.
