Gisangdo

Gisangdo refers to a traditional Korean performing arts troupe comprised of male entertainers, typically associated with provincial areas. Historically, Gisangdo provided entertainment at local festivals, celebrations, and other community events. Their performances often included singing, dancing, instrumental music (particularly percussion), and storytelling, reflecting the cultural traditions of their respective regions. While often overshadowed by the more widely recognized (and exclusively female) Gisaeng, Gisangdo played a significant role in preserving and transmitting folk arts and local musical traditions within Korean society, particularly during periods when formal artistic institutions were less accessible to the general population. They were frequently called upon to perform at agricultural festivals and events celebrating local harvests, demonstrating a strong connection to rural communities. The status and social acceptance of Gisangdo varied across different periods of Korean history and also differed regionally. They were sometimes viewed with respect for their artistic skills, while at other times, they faced social stigmas due to their association with entertainment and performance. The practice of Gisangdo has significantly declined in modern times, although efforts are being made to preserve and revitalize the traditional arts they represent.
