Bushmanland (South West Africa)

Bushmanland, formerly in South West Africa (now Namibia), was an area designated as a homeland for the San people (also known as Bushmen). It was established under the apartheid policies of South Africa during its administration of South West Africa.

The area was geographically located in the northeastern part of Namibia, characterized by arid and semi-arid conditions. The intention behind its creation was to provide the San with a degree of self-governance and preserve their traditional way of life, separate from the white minority population. However, in practice, Bushmanland suffered from severe underdevelopment, lack of resources, and limited autonomy. The land was often unsuitable for agriculture, and the traditional hunting and gathering lifestyle of the San was disrupted.

Following Namibia's independence in 1990, Bushmanland ceased to exist as a separate administrative entity. The area was integrated into the broader national territory, primarily falling within the Otjozondjupa Region. The San people residing in the former Bushmanland continue to face significant challenges related to land rights, economic development, access to education and healthcare, and the preservation of their cultural identity. Efforts are being made by the Namibian government and various organizations to address these issues and improve the living conditions of the San community.
