David Marcus (writer)

David Marcus (1924-2009) was an Irish writer, editor, and literary critic. Born in Cork, Ireland, he is primarily known for his short stories and novels exploring themes of Irish life, often with a focus on Jewish identity within that context.

Marcus was a prominent figure in the Irish literary scene for several decades. He edited the influential "New Irish Writing" page in The Irish Press from 1968 to 1986, providing a platform for emerging Irish writers, including Maeve Binchy and Neil Jordan. He also edited several anthologies of Irish short stories.

His own writing includes the novels To Next Year in Jerusalem (1950), A Land Not Theirs (1986), Givenchy's Garden (1993), and Charades (1999). He also published several collections of short stories, including The Irish Sword of Light and Judas (1992).

Marcus's work is characterized by its subtle prose, insightful observations of human nature, and exploration of themes of identity, belonging, and cultural difference. He received numerous awards for his contributions to Irish literature.
