Clutch (pin fastener)

A clutch, in the context of pin fasteners, is a component used to secure a pin or post in place, typically in jewelry, lapel pins, and badges. It functions as a mechanical fastener that grips the pin, preventing it from slipping out or being accidentally removed.

The most common type of clutch consists of a small, generally mushroom-shaped piece with a hole through its center. This hole is designed to accept the pin or post. Internal mechanisms within the clutch create friction or locking force to hold the pin securely. These mechanisms may include spring-loaded components, internal teeth, or pressure-fit designs.

To attach a clutch, the pin is inserted through the fabric or material and then pushed into the hole of the clutch. Depending on the design, a slight amount of pressure may be required to engage the locking mechanism. To release the pin, the user often presses down on a lever or releases pressure on the clutch body, disengaging the locking mechanism and allowing the pin to be withdrawn.

Clutches are typically made from metals like brass, steel, or alloys, though plastic versions also exist. The material choice influences durability and holding strength. The size and design of the clutch varies depending on the application, with smaller clutches used for delicate items and larger, more robust clutches used for items that require greater security.
