Exile (TV series)
Exile is a three-part British television thriller, written by Danny Brocklehurst and starring John Simm, Jim Broadbent, and Olivia Colman. It was first broadcast on BBC One in May 2011.
The series follows Tom Ronstadt (Simm), a journalist struggling with addiction and professional failure, who returns to his hometown of Manchester to care for his father, Sam (Broadbent), a successful but increasingly afflicted former newspaper editor suffering from Alzheimer's disease. As Tom spends time with his father, he discovers unsettling secrets and hidden files that suggest his father's career was built on darker, potentially criminal, actions.
The plot revolves around Tom's investigation into these long-buried secrets, piecing together fragments of his father's past through interviews, recovered documents, and his own unreliable memories. He confronts both his father's past and his own personal demons, uncovering a complex web of corruption, betrayal, and potentially even murder, all while attempting to understand the man his father once was. Olivia Colman plays Nancy, a former colleague of Sam's who assists Tom in his investigation.
The series explores themes of family relationships, memory, guilt, redemption, and the corrosive power of secrets. It received positive reviews for its compelling plot, strong performances, and atmospheric direction.
