Dinosaurs (band)

Dinosaurs was an American rock band formed in 1982 in San Francisco, California. The band was spearheaded by singer-songwriter Barry Melton, formerly of Country Joe and the Fish. The initial lineup also included Peter Albin (Big Brother and the Holding Company), John Cipollina (Quicksilver Messenger Service), Greg Elmore (Quicksilver Messenger Service) and Robert Hunter (lyricist for the Grateful Dead).

The band's focus was on playing classic rock and roll, blues, and R&B covers, often with extended improvisational jams. Dinosaurs quickly gained a local following in the San Francisco Bay Area, becoming known for their energetic live performances and the pedigree of their members.

Over the years, the lineup of Dinosaurs underwent numerous changes. Melton remained a constant presence, leading the band through various iterations. Other notable musicians who played with Dinosaurs at different times include Merl Saunders, Spencer Dryden (Jefferson Airplane), David LaFlamme (It's a Beautiful Day), and Papa John Creach.

Dinosaurs released a self-titled album in 1982, which showcased their repertoire of cover songs. The band continued to tour and perform sporadically throughout the 1980s and 1990s, maintaining a loyal fanbase who appreciated their commitment to classic rock and their improvisational style. While not achieving mainstream success, Dinosaurs held a significant place in the San Francisco music scene, embodying the spirit of the city's rich musical history.
