Flag (crater)
Flag is a small, bowl-shaped lunar impact crater that lies within the larger crater Apollo, located on the far side of the Moon. The name "Flag" is unofficial and is one of several craters within Apollo named after notable deceased American astronauts, honoring the Apollo program. It specifically commemorates David Randolph Scott, commander of Apollo 15, the mission during which he famously planted the American flag on the Moon.
The crater itself is relatively unremarkable in terms of size and morphology. It is significantly smaller than Apollo, which encompasses it entirely. Its primary importance lies in its commemorative naming convention. Its simple, bowl-shaped structure is typical of small lunar craters formed by relatively recent impact events.
The crater serves as a geographical marker within the larger Apollo crater, and it is used in lunar cartography and reference materials relating to the Apollo landing sites and astronauts. Its position allows for easier identification within the more expansive terrain of the Apollo crater and the lunar far side.
