His release in 2008, facilitated by a humanitarian mission, garnered national and international attention.

Following his release, Jara returned to public service. He again served as Governor of Meta, focusing on issues such as infrastructure development, social programs, and peace initiatives. He has been an advocate for victims of the armed conflict and has worked towards reconciliation and social justice in Colombia.
