Kannagi (newspaper)
Kannagi was a Tamil language daily newspaper published in Madras (now Chennai), India. It was established in 1947 and was associated with the Dravidar Kazhagam, a social movement advocating for the rights and self-respect of Dravidians. The newspaper played a role in promoting the ideology of the Dravidian movement, focusing on social justice, anti-casteism, and rationalism. While specific details about its circulation, editorial stance on various issues, and eventual closure are limited in readily available public sources, it is remembered as a publication that contributed to the socio-political discourse of Tamil Nadu during the mid-20th century. The name "Kannagi" is derived from the central character of the Tamil epic Silappatikaram, a woman of great virtue and righteous anger, symbolizing justice and resistance to oppression, values that resonated with the Dravidian movement's ideals.
