Yavne-Yam

Yavne-Yam (Hebrew: יבנה-ים, lit. "Yavne on the Sea") is an ancient harbor city located on the Mediterranean coast of Israel, approximately 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) west of the modern city of Yavne. Archaeological excavations at the site have revealed evidence of continuous occupation from the Middle Bronze Age through the Crusader period, indicating its strategic importance as a maritime center throughout history.

The site is identified with the biblical town of "Yamnia" mentioned in the Book of Maccabees. During the Hellenistic and Roman periods, Yavne-Yam served as a crucial port and trading hub, facilitating commerce between the land of Israel and other Mediterranean regions. Its importance declined following the Arab conquest in the 7th century CE, although the site continued to be inhabited on a smaller scale.

Today, Yavne-Yam is an archaeological site attracting researchers and visitors interested in exploring its rich history and maritime heritage. Discoveries at the site include remains of fortifications, storage facilities, residential buildings, and a harbor structure, providing valuable insights into the life and economy of a coastal settlement in the ancient world. Ongoing excavations and research continue to uncover more information about the site's significance and role in the region's history. The area is now a national park in Israel.
