Babeldaob

Babeldaob, also spelled Babelthuap, is the largest island in the Republic of Palau. It constitutes over 70% of Palau's land area and is located northeast of Koror. Unlike the other Palauan Rock Islands, Babeldaob is largely composed of volcanic terrain and is characterized by rolling hills, dense forests, and mangrove swamps.

Geography and Environment: Babeldaob boasts a diverse landscape, including Palau's highest point, Mount Ngerchelchuus. Numerous rivers and waterfalls traverse the island. The ecosystem supports a wide array of flora and fauna, including endemic bird species and the saltwater crocodile. Mangrove forests fringe the coastal areas, providing important nursery habitats for marine life.

Political and Administrative Significance: Babeldaob is divided into ten of Palau's sixteen states: Aimeliik, Airai, Melekeok, Ngaraard, Ngarchelong, Ngardmau, Ngatpang, Ngchesar, Ngiwal, and Ngeremlengui. The capital of Palau, Ngerulmud, is located in Melekeok on the east coast of Babeldaob. This move of the capital from Koror signified a shift in focus towards developing the less populated and more ecologically diverse Babeldaob.

Infrastructure: The Compact Road, funded by the United States, encircles Babeldaob, providing access to the island's diverse communities and facilitating development. Prior to its completion, transportation around the island was challenging. The road has significantly impacted the island's accessibility and connectivity.

Economy and Culture: Traditional practices, including fishing, farming, and handicrafts, remain important to the local economy. Tourism is developing on Babeldaob, focusing on eco-tourism and cultural experiences. Archaeological sites and traditional villages offer glimpses into Palau's rich history and cultural heritage.

Challenges: Babeldaob faces challenges related to sustainable development, infrastructure maintenance, and balancing economic growth with environmental protection. Deforestation, soil erosion, and pollution are environmental concerns that require careful management.
