Ed Rice
Ed Rice (born Edward F. Rice) is a former American college basketball coach. He is best known for his tenure as the head coach of Loyola Marymount University (LMU) from 1985 to 1994. During his time at LMU, he coached the high-scoring Lions teams that featured future NBA players Hank Gathers, Bo Kimble, and Jeff Fryer.
Rice's coaching philosophy emphasized an up-tempo, run-and-gun style of play. This strategy gained national attention and resulted in impressive offensive statistics. In 1990, his LMU team advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, following the tragic death of Hank Gathers earlier in the tournament.
Prior to LMU, Rice coached at Citrus College in California. After leaving LMU, he worked in basketball broadcasting. He is often remembered for his contributions to college basketball and the unique, exciting brand of basketball he cultivated at Loyola Marymount.
