William T. Powers (industrialist)

William T. Powers was an American industrialist best known for his work in the textile industry and his innovations in water power systems during the 19th century. Born in Lyman, Maine, he moved to New Hampshire and played a significant role in the development of Manchester as a major manufacturing center.

Powers was instrumental in harnessing the power of the Amoskeag Falls on the Merrimack River to drive textile mills. He served as the superintendent of the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company, one of the largest textile companies in the world at the time. Under his leadership, the company expanded significantly, contributing greatly to the economic growth of Manchester. He oversaw the construction of canals, dams, and mill buildings, implementing advanced engineering techniques for the period.

Powers's contributions extended beyond the technical aspects of industrial development. He was also involved in the planning and construction of worker housing, contributing to the creation of a planned industrial community. His efforts helped shape the physical and social landscape of Manchester, establishing it as a model industrial city. He is recognized for his expertise in hydraulic engineering and his significant impact on the development of water power for industrial purposes in the United States. He died in 1867.
