Massa River (Morocco)
The Massa River is a perennial river located in the Souss-Massa region of southwestern Morocco. It flows for approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) from the Anti-Atlas Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean. The river's source lies in the High Atlas Mountains, and it traverses a semi-arid landscape before reaching the coast.
The Massa River is a significant hydrological feature in the region, providing water for agriculture and supporting a diverse ecosystem. A portion of its lower course, along with the Oued Souss estuary further north, is protected as part of the Souss-Massa National Park. This park is a crucial area for birdlife, particularly migratory birds, and other wildlife.
The river's flow can be highly variable, influenced by seasonal rainfall patterns and occasional flash floods. Human activities, including agriculture and water extraction, have impacted the river's water quality and quantity. Conservation efforts are underway to manage water resources and protect the biodiversity of the Souss-Massa ecosystem.
