Tumling
A Tumling is a small, uninhabited island or islet, typically rocky and often used as a navigational landmark. The term is commonly used in coastal regions of Scandinavia, particularly in Norway and Sweden, and sometimes in Scotland. Tumlings are often exposed to the elements and may be partially submerged at high tide. Their primary function is often to serve as a visual aid for sailors and fishermen navigating treacherous coastal waters. Due to their small size and exposed nature, they rarely support significant vegetation or wildlife. The presence of numerous tumlings is characteristic of certain types of fjords and archipelagos. The word "tumling" likely originates from a root related to turning or tumbling, possibly referencing the unpredictable nature of the sea around these small landmasses or their often rounded, tumbled appearance.
