Steek (Sikh literature)

Steek, in the context of Sikh literature, refers to a commentary or exegesis of the Guru Granth Sahib, the central religious scripture of Sikhism, or other important Sikh texts. A steek provides explanation and interpretation of the text's meaning, often delving into the historical, linguistic, and spiritual context of the verses (shabads).

Steeks can vary in their scope and depth. Some are relatively brief explanations intended for a general audience, while others are detailed, scholarly works that examine the text from multiple perspectives. The purpose of a steek is to make the often complex and symbolic language of the Guru Granth Sahib accessible to a wider readership and to illuminate its profound spiritual messages.

Different steeks may present varying interpretations of the same verse, reflecting diverse perspectives within the Sikh tradition. The authority and influence of a particular steek often depend on the reputation and standing of its author within the Sikh community. Important early steeks are those connected to the Nirmala Samparda. Modern steeks are often available in multiple languages, furthering access for global Sikh communities. The study of steeks is considered an essential part of understanding and practicing Sikhism.
