John Fordham (bishop)

John Fordham (died 1425) was an English medieval cleric who served as Bishop of Durham and Bishop of Ely.

Born in Fordham, Cambridgeshire, his early career saw him hold positions as Rector of Mepal, Cambridgeshire, and then Archdeacon of Ely. He became chaplain to John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, solidifying his position within the Lancastrian faction.

Fordham's career advanced rapidly through royal patronage. He was appointed Keeper of the Privy Seal in 1377 and served as Lord High Treasurer of England on multiple occasions (1379-1381, 1386-1388, and 1394-1395).

He was consecrated Bishop of Durham on 9 September 1381. During his tenure at Durham, he faced challenges related to Scottish raids and border disputes. His administration focused on maintaining order and protecting the interests of the Bishopric.

Fordham was translated to the see of Ely on 27 January 1388. He oversaw considerable building work at Ely Cathedral, including completing the West Tower. He was also involved in disputes regarding the rights and privileges of the Bishopric.

His political influence waned somewhat after the deposition of Richard II in 1399, although he remained Bishop of Ely until his death in 1425. He is buried in Ely Cathedral. Fordham was known for his administrative skills and loyalty to the Lancastrian cause, though he also acquired a reputation for self-enrichment during his time in office.
