Tim Smith (Cardiacs)
Tim Smith (1961-2020) was an English singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, best known as the founder, principal composer, and frontman of the cult experimental rock band Cardiacs. He was the band's primary guitarist, vocalist, and artistic visionary.
Smith's musical style was highly distinctive and complex, characterized by its use of polyrhythms, angular melodies, abrupt tempo changes, and surreal, often darkly humorous lyrics. His compositions drew from a diverse range of influences, including progressive rock, punk rock, art pop, and English folk music, creating a unique and often unsettling sonic landscape.
Beyond Cardiacs, Smith was involved in numerous other musical projects, including The Sea Nymphs (a spin-off/precursor band to Cardiacs featuring his sister Sarah Smith and William D. Drake), Spratleys Japs, and Panixphere. He also produced albums for other artists, including The Monsoon Bassoon and Knifeworld.
Smith's influence on contemporary music is significant, with numerous artists citing him as an inspiration. His innovative approach to songwriting and his uncompromising artistic vision have earned him a dedicated following and a reputation as a true original in the world of experimental music. He was forced into retirement and subsequently passed away following a stroke. His death was a significant loss to the music community.
