Lyfing

Lyfing was an Anglo-Saxon Archbishop of Canterbury, serving from 1013 to 1020. His name also appears as Livingus in some historical records. He succeeded Archbishop Ælfheah (Alphege), who was martyred by the Danes in 1012.

Lyfing's episcopate occurred during a turbulent period in English history, marked by Danish incursions and ultimately the reign of Sweyn Forkbeard and Cnut the Great. He played a role in attempting to navigate the political landscape of the time, although details of his specific actions are somewhat scarce in surviving historical sources.

He is known to have traveled to Rome to receive his pallium, the symbol of archiepiscopal authority, from the Pope. He oversaw the administration of the archdiocese of Canterbury during a period of considerable upheaval.

Lyfing was succeeded as Archbishop of Canterbury by Æthelnoth in 1020. He is generally considered a relatively obscure figure in the line of Canterbury archbishops, overshadowed by the dramatic events that surrounded his tenure and the more prominent figures who preceded and followed him.
