Fort St. George (Thomaston, Maine)
Fort St. George was a short-lived fortification built in Thomaston, Maine, during the War of 1812. Constructed in 1812 and 1813 on a bluff overlooking the St. George River, it served primarily as a defensive position to protect the town and the surrounding area from potential British naval incursions.
The fort was never directly involved in any significant military engagements. Its presence likely acted as a deterrent, contributing to the relative safety of Thomaston during the war. The structure was relatively small, housing a limited number of troops and cannons.
After the conclusion of the War of 1812, Fort St. George was decommissioned and eventually abandoned. Over time, the earthworks eroded, and little remains of the original structure today. While the precise location of the fort is known, no significant historical markers or preserved remains are present on the site. It is remembered locally as a part of Thomaston's history and contribution to the War of 1812 effort.
